During the recruitment process a total of 28 people requested details of the project. Of those, 22 applied and were interviewed.

On 14 December 2000, 15 of the potential candidates were invited to participate on a taster day at Crab Wood Country Park, Winchester. This gave them the opportunity to gain insight into what the project would entail and to make an informed decision about whether coppicing work would suit them. It also allowed staff from Wessex Coppice Group and a number of mentors to speak informally to the trainees and thereby enable them to finalise the selection of trainees.

Twelve trainees were recruited to the project, six from Hampshire and six from West Sussex, aged from early 20’s to early 40’s and two were women.

Of the twelve trainees who began the project two male trainees left the project, one through ill health and the second into full time employment in forestry contracting; both were from West Sussex, only one was replaced. The new trainee was female and a non driver and from Hampshire.
