It is worth reflecting on the progress made by some of the trainees as a
result of coming on this programme. They each have a success story, but
here is a representative selection of them to give an idea of how the
project has helped them.
One trainee had been in forestry, but was made redundant three years
ago. After three years of unemployment for want of his own chainsaw and
essential equipment, he was able to leave the project early to start a
four-year full time self-employed contract. Two trainees came to the project, because coppicing is what they had always wanted to do and were intending to do it off their own backs. Neither of them had the financial means to get started, so the provision of the equipment and the training helped them to realise their aims sooner than they would have been able to before. They are now both self-employed, working in association with each other and with some of the mentors in the project. One of the trainees was a redundant farmer, who came to the project because he wanted to return to working on his own land, but did not know how best to utilise his land in a sound financial and sustainable way. He now has a detailed business plan and is proposing to be self-employed from autumn 2001. Long-term depression is a condition that many unemployed people experience. One trainee has been able to gain sufficient confidence to go self-employed part time and to set up a dot.com company and has had a bank loan approved on the strength of the business plan. A lack of direction in life is not uncommon amongst unemployed people. They are seeking job satisfaction, but have not yet found the job for them. One trainee had not stayed in a job for more than 3 months, but has now completed this programme lasting 6 months. He is now working part-time with a Pole-lather and part-time in a wholesale plant nursery and intends to go self-employed in the future, when possible. Three female trainees came into the programme wondering if the male dominated industry would suit them. They are all proposing to go into coppice work as soon as personal circumstances permit. One has already set up a company with two friends combining coppice work with Landscaping.
