The project had to make changes because of Foot & Mouth Disease. Surprisingly, despite the setbacks, the project remained more or less on track. All the project outputs of Training days, Training Needs Analysis, Chainsaw certification and Driving Lessons have achieved or even exceeded targets. The only output, which was not fully met, was Mentored Work Experience. A total of 17 days of Mentored Work Experience (MWE) were delivered, a shortfall of 9 days. Whilst the anticipated shortfall of 9 days of MWE is unfortunate, it is unlikely to affect the targeted job outcomes of the project. The intensive efforts to catch up meant that training and MWE was taking up 4 or 5 days each week and some trainees are having difficulty fitting this around the requirements of the job centres. It was therefore decided to extend the project into May.
The trainees on the greenwood new entrants project were offered the opportunity to travel with a group of woodland craftspeople to Gothenburg in Sweden in order to demonstrate woodland skills at a large garden fair, Tradigard I Vast, West Sweden Garden Fair. Government Office for the South East agreed to allow some of the travel budget from this project to be used to take up this opportunity. The trainees voted two of their number to attend. The two trainees demonstrated their skills and promoted the greenwood new entrants project. The project had an under spend in the travel budget due to travel restrictions caused by Foot & Mouth disease, we therefore contributed flights and accommodation costs. The woodland craftsmen who had arranged transport for their own materials covered the transport of the trainee’s wood, products and tools. The organisers of Tradigard I Vast, West Sweden Garden Fair, covered the cost of the stand. Production of marketing materials was covered by Wessex Coppice Group.
