Woodmans World : Carl Sadler

Tel: +44(0)1208 824932

Carl works with coppiced sweet chestnut, hazel and willow to craft a wide range of products including wattle hurdles, chestnut gate hurdles, cleft oak/chestnut gates and fencing.

The company, which is based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, create garden trugs, brooms, gate hurdles and cleft arches. The design for the trug stems back some 150 years and is traditionally made from chestnut and willow. Trug-making is very labour-intensive and like all woodland crafts, requires great skill and dedication.

Ben May

Tel/ Fax: +44(0)1805 622214

Ben, from Devon, produces a diverse range of products including wattle fencing, bentwood furniture, rose arches, charcoal and wood sculptures. He runs Woodland Craft courses and undertakes Public Art commissions.

Ben also creates a very popular range of wooden mushrooms and toadstools carved out of a single piece of wood and sold at competitive prices. Not only do they provide comfortable seating but they act as a wonderful talking point. A new range of products he is launching this year includes sculptural Christmas trees and water garden features.

Coppice Works: Tim Hutton

Tel: +44(0)1208 850670

Coppice Works started by planting trees, restoring neglected coppice and laying hedges. While this work is still done, it is now part of a process where coppice wood is used to make a range of woodland products which include yurts, gate hurdles, garden arbours and fruit picking ladders.

Coppice Works looks after its own small woodland and works with others, owners and woodland groups, interested in reviving home grown, sustainable managed woodland in the South West of England. Yurt Works is a series of yurt making workshops which run throughout the year.
